Sarah Towers, LICSW
Sarah (she/her) received her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and obtained her Master of Social Work degree from Smith College School for Social Work in 2016. Since then, Sarah has practiced in community mental health in Northampton, working with adults of varying ages and backgrounds, with a particular focus on complex trauma and anxiety. Sarah also holds a Master of Arts in Fiction from Boston University, and before becoming a psychotherapist, taught creative writing and literature at the Bard Prison Initiative, Colgate University, and Boston University.
Sarah’s approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that we all have a story to tell and a need to make meaning of our lives. She brings a love of language, metaphor, and creative play to her clinical work. She has found that when a strong therapeutic relationship is built, a dynamic space opens up in which we can speak and be heard—and in so doing, find strengths we didn’t know we had. We discover possibilities for change and gain freedom from old patterns and limiting beliefs: we become the author of our own story.
While Sarah’s orientation is primarily psychodynamic, she makes use of a range of modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy, internal family systems, and narrative therapy. Sarah also provides clinical supervision to MSW candidates.
